Heroes in the Night - Poem

When an explorer sets out on an adventure, he takes along various items to help him along the way, like some hiking gear, a road map, a first aid kit, food or drink and so on. One of the many objects he could also take with is a flashlight to be used at nighttime if he would need something to light his way.

At this time of year, right after the day of judgement, when we enter the Aseres Yemei Teshuva, we are taking out our flashlights which was a G-d given gift to us for the times that we may need it, such as when we find ourselves in a dark chapter in life, a spiritual flashlight of prayer would help us.

But G-d also gave us this flashlight to be used when we need to search inside of ourselves, in our souls, to examine and to fix those things we are doing wrong, or even just to improve in serving G-d, by taking upon ourselves to be more careful when we pray or doing a specific mitzvah with extra care.

When we are on this new journey every year, a new journey of self-improvement and discovery, when we use our flashlight, the area around us becomes illuminated and bright. Now imagine what would happen when all our lights would combine together. I imagine that they all would produce a heroic light so strong, that the holiness felt by its warmth would cause the arrival of the Shechinah and signal the redemption to begin.

Let's produce this heroic light, this very year.

Written below is a poem I wrote this past summer, entitled "Heroes in the Night". I hope that you enjoy it.

Heroes in the Night - Poem

In the darkness,
Among the shadow of the trees
The moon is trapped
Shattered, is my beliefs
I am drowning
In a sea that's not there
The waters overriding me
Please, help

Let us be heroes
On this night
Let us be heroes
In this fright
Lets raise our fire
Climb a little higher
Out to a sunrise
Let us be heroes

Although the path
Is right in front of me
This path
I cannot see
Although I stand directly on it
My feet don't feel a part of me
Please, help
Dear hero
