A Yom Kippur Prayer - Poem
As we begin to get ourselves prepared for the holiest days of the year, Yom Kippur, I wanted to share with you a special poem I wrote, in honor of the great fast day. The concept and idea behind this poem was that each stanza, or sometimes, each two stanzas, should focus on different elements related to the holiness of the day, such as the Kol Nidrei prayer said at night, or the fact that we are compared to the heavenly angles, and try to describe the holiness in the best way possible.
I hope I have done this concept justice.
I hope you all fast well and that this year should be one of happiness, health, success and joy, for you and your families,
Gmar Chasima Tovah,
Yitzy Schweitzer

A Yom Kippur Prayer - Poem
Standing in the synagogue,
Soon we will begin to pray,
Can you sense the true awesomeness and the majesty,
Of this holy day?
The Chazan steps forward,
Looks around and takes a bow,
He begins Kol Nidrei, his voice full of emotion,
So powerful, strong and loud.
Dressed in our cloth of pure, pristine white,
Standing in silence, some with a tear in their eye,
There is a special glow of bright, heavenly light, emanating from our hearts,
We are men compared to angles, tonight.
We pray for our names,
To be sealed by Your hand, in the book of life,
And that this year, happiness and health,
Should replace the heartache and strife.
Hours later, as the gates of heaven close,
And this day is almost over,
We pray and beg, one last time
Hoping we can get, to you, just that little bit closer
Won't you accept our prayers?
Won't you protect us from all harm and sorrow?
Can't you give us a reason to smile?
A reason to hope for a better tomorrow?
