The Torah Mountain - Poem

This coming Sunday is Rosh Chodesh Sivan, and, of course, only a few days later we will celebrate the Yom Tov of Shavuot. In preparation, I wanted to create a simple, yet effective poem, about the central theme of the Yom Tov: The giving of the Torah at Har Sinai.

I am sure we all know the great classic song, sung to us throughout our younger, elementary years, by our parents and teachers, "I am a mountain, so very high". It tells the story of Har Sinai and the reason why Hashem chose this simple, humble, unimpressive mountain to be the one on which the Torah was given. Of course, the reason was because although, simple and unimpressive, Har Sinai, had a not-so-simple, and very impressive amount of humility, which G-d saw within him and therefore, the Torah was given on him.

These are the feeling I wanted to capture: One of humility, simplicity and yet, a little touch of wonder. I hope you find the elements of those feelings throughout the poem and I also hope you enjoy the read.

Best of Wishes,

Yitzy Schweitzer

The Torah Mountain - Poem

Although he seemed to be a simple mountain,
He had something special about him,
In his humility, he kept life calm,
Kept his light soft and dim.

But his humble surface,
Indeed would soon suffice,
For the Torah to be given,
Before our eyes.

From his plain peak,
Bloomed flowers and sprouted greenery,
Thunder clapped and lightning struck,
As Am Yisrael stood in unity.

One man with one heart,
United, as we should be,
At the foot of the mountain we stood,
As G-d’s voice rang out with the word “Anochi…"
