Safe Travels, Old Friend - Poem

Over the last couple of days, it seemed to me that the inspiration to create a poem was not forthcoming. It also seemed that when I dd write, most of my ideas, were not really making it out in rhyme. The idea was there, its conceptualization was definitely building itself up, yet the lyrical intricacies and flowing design of the words just was not falling into place.

I hope those ideas won't sit back and disappear and that one day, I will be able to convey them in a lyrically pleasing way.

Anyhow, this weeks poem, comes from my portfolio, from the vault, if you will. Written in January this year, it is written in as a rhyme infused letter, with every three lines rhyming with the next. It is a letter shared between a young man and his best friend, as the friend prepares to leave the town or city where the two them grew up together, a brotherly like relationship forming in the process.

As expected for our narrator, saying goodbye to his dearest friend is a challenge, but he feels as though he must say some form of farewell. He expresses happiness and a fondness towards their many shared memories of fun and joviality and then expresses his hope for his friend to be happy, wherever this new part of life will direct him.

I invite you to travel along a beautiful road of memories, emotion and hope.

I wish you a pleasant read,

Safe Travels, Old Friend - Poem

Dear friend,

It's been years,

To many to count,

That we've known each other,

I don't think,

Its quite wrong for me to say,

In that time, we became like brothers,

We laughed,

We vibed,

We just lived with a smile,

My friend,

Having you by my side,

Made everything worthwhile.

True friends are rare,

That Is something,

So many tell,

It does not take a genius,

To work out,

They mean their words well.

Because I've never had,

Another friend who was,

Exactly like you,

That could only mean,

That out friendship,

Was true.

Now, it's time,

To say goodbye,

As you move away from home,

To distant lands,

Miles away,

Untouched and unknown,

It's tough, no lying,

I want you to stay,

But I know you must go,

So I give you this letter,

I give you this hug,

I love you, more than you'd ever know.

A small tear,

Leaves my eye,

As I watch your car turn around the bend,

I raise my hand,

A silent goodbye,

Safe travels, old friend
