Just a Simple Smile - Poem

I was recently watching a video on YouTube from a channel called SoulSnack about a homeless ten-year-old orphan who breaks in to a house that appears empty in search of some food. Unexpectedly, the home owners return while he is there and despite his best efforts to hide, the owners find him and upon hearing about the child's homeless situation they decide to help the young boy. To see the full story if you want, click here.

Anyway, after watching the video, I was browsing the comments on it, when I found this one which stated "The boy's smile at the end was priceless". I wanted to see what they were referring to and so I re-watched the ending.

And found what I wanted.

Then that got me thinking about writing a poem about a homeless person who gets ignored by everyone who passes him until... someone... gives him a smile.

Here is the poem

Enjoy!

Just a Simple Smile - Poem

On the sidewalk sits a man,
Ragged clothes, untidy, unclean.
He is holding out a cup, begging for change,
But nobody cares, so nobody gives.

He has barely eaten all day,
All he needs is a little something more.
But every time he asks,
The same answer as before,
Because nobody cares, so nobody gives

But one day came a simple man,
No significant cash with him.
But, for this poor, homeless stranger,
He had something else, something special,
To give him.

From across the road he saw him looking,
And when the two made eye contact with each other,
The simple man gave him a wave and a smile.
That was all he gave,
But for the homeless man,
It was worthwhile.

Because now,
Every time,
He is feeling down,
He remembers that day,
That a simple man,
Came his way,
And offered,
Just that one...
Simple smile.
