The Bridge of Unused Shoes - Poem

I am not sure how many of my readers are familiar with the Danube Riverbank in Budapest, Hungary, but those who do know about it, would probably also about the Shoes Memorial right on the riverbank where thousands of shoes of men, woman, and children are pinned down to the ground to memorialize the people who were killed right there by the Germans, yemach shemom.

I was recently encouraged by my teacher to write a poem about these shoes. Obviously, I have never been to see this memorial with my own eyes, yet I have read about it, so I tapped into my knowledge about the significance of this place and set my pen to work.

Here is the result which I am posting on here, in honor of remembrance day.

I hope you enjoy the read,

The Brigde of Unused Shoes - Poem

Many people have walked this path
On this bridge across the water
So high
Yet on this bridge
There are footprints that have not settled
That have not made an impact

These shoes were once worn
Once they were full of life
And joy
And now they sit in emptiness
On this bridge
Almost forgotten
Despite being seen every day

Will the people who graced these shoes
Walk with their dignity again?
We believe that day is coming soon
But when will it come?
With patience we still wait…
