The Soldiers Medal - Poem

I was recently asked by one of my teachers to write a poem about a war veteran getting a medal of honor. Initially, I was skeptical about such an idea as I had no inspiration strike to be able to write anything of the sort. However, after a little bit of thoughts going through my head about what I possibly could write on such a topic I came up with the poem written below.

I invite you to take a look into the mind of a war veteran who is reflecting on the experience of getting the medal of honor

I hope you find in enjoyable

The Soldiers Medal - Poem

I fought a war,
Across the soil of my home,
I’ve traveled in strange lands,
To the average citizen, I may be unknown.

We won the war,
A medal, I was presented,
But inside my heart, painful memories,
Thoughts I have long resented.

I did not wish to think these thoughts,
On the battlefield there is no time to cry.
I had to be tough, unyielding and commanding,
But, Inside, these thoughts never did die.

Now, I am alone,
Tonight, I sit by the fire, take my soul through these thoughts long ago,
Thinking about the souls lost, my dear beloved comrades,
And the memories, only we, together would know.

So although I’ve served my country,
And I humbly accept this medal for doing so,
I owe a lot to these comrades,
Who’s heroics will these people ever know?
