Our Father, Our King - Poem

In honor of Rosh Hashana, I was asked by one of my subscribers to write a special poem. After thinking up various ideas, including a poem focusing on the greatness and magnitude of G-ds kingship, or a concept about asking for a new year of life, I decided to try and combine the two of them and see what I can create.

The poem, entitled a "Our Father, Our King" starts off with a young man, who is standing before G-d on Rosh Hashana, wondering what he could possibly say that will effectively and honestly describe the incredibility of G-ds kingship over the world, as well as His complete and absolute sense of justice and truth with which he judges. Not to mention, of course, is the deep and honest love that G-d has for each and every one of His children. How could one person possibly describe all that and what words should he use?

When our friend, the young man, realizes, that however hard he tries, he will never have enough words to describe accurately how incredible G-d is he wonders how he could possibly pray to G-d and ask for another year of good life. He realizes that all he must do is believe in his prayers and hope with all his heart that they will be answered.

The poem finishes off with a request that despite the fact that we cannot adequately praise G-d, we could try our best. As we praise G-d we ask him to grant us another year of life, coupled with the redemption and return to his holy temple this year.

I hope you enjoy the poem and I wish you all a Shana Tovah. May this year bring only goodness and happiness to you and all of Klal Yisrael.

With Love,

Our Father, Our King - Poem
Standing before the Al-mighty,
Waves of emotion wash over me,
How can I ever praise my G-d,
The one and only?

His greatness to greatness for me to say,
I will never truly understand his ways,
What can I ask of him, now,
Standing face to face?

I compose myself,
Believing in this holy prayer,
Hoping with all my heart,
That it will be answered.

Avinu Malkeinu,
Hear us as we pray to you,
We want to get closer to you,
We want to serve you.

Won't you, this year, take us home,
To your city of gold,
Return us to ways of old,
Help wake up our souls?

The king of all forms of being,
Praising you is not easy,
Because I could say a thousand words,
A million more to say, there will be.

But as you are our king,
Won't you please grant us what we are asking,
A new year of good life, so your praises,
Once again, we could sing?
