The Wait - Poem

As Jews living in exile, deep within our hearts, as each day goes by, we yearn and hope for the Geulah Shelema to come so that we could return to our holy land to be able to serve G-d in abundant joy and serenity. The over two thousand years of struggles and tests our nation has had to face are those the likes of which no other nation has faced and yet, despite the countless cries for help, and the millions of tears, our nation has remained faithful and strong, unyielding in the face of pain.

The following poem was inspired by the opening line of Mordechai Ben David's classic Yiddish song, "Ich Hob Gevart" (or in English "I Have Waited,") a song about the Saar Shalom of Belz, the first Belzer Rebbe and his desperate desire to see Eliyahu Hanavi (Elijah the Prophet). The story discusses how the Rebbe stayed up learning for a thousand nights to see Eliyahu and on the thousandth night there was a major thunderstorm, so bad that the windows of the Shul in which the Rebbe was learning smashed and his soft candlelight was blown out. Yet, as the night passed, he waited and waited, until finally... Eliyahu Hanavi came.

I was inspired to take this concept of waiting for so long and turn it into an emotional plea to G-d that He send us Moshiach soon. I hope you enjoy it.

May our prayers for Redemption be answered speedily and may Moshiach come toward us now.

The Wait - Poem

I have waited and waited,
For many years hoping,
Soon He will come,
Even now, He is coming,
But after the clouds turned dark,
And the sun began to set,
I wondered with sorrow,
How much worse can our pain get?

I have waited and waited,
And now, again for one more day,
Tell me, in how much longer,
Will our night become day?
How many more tears,
Must we shed to awaken,
The lion of our redemption,
But, still, I’ll try to keep waiting.

It is almost a broken promise,
To believe in His arrival,
Your chosen nation, Hashem,
Must fight for their survival,
Standing strong,
In the face of adversity,
Holding on to their faith,
Their faith in thee.

Tell me, how strong is one man,
How strong is your nation
To await with so much love,
So much belief and patience?
Is it not time to reward them?
To show them their fathers face,
Can that time be now?
Or do we still have to wait?

Close your eyes, my brothers,
Imagine the scene,
All of us standing,
With calmness, our soul serene,
G-ds presence is felt,
The world has seen our redemption,
Understood that we,
Our G-ds chosen nation.

Dear brothers, keep your faith,
As hard as it may be,
Pray for him to come,
And he will, you’ll see,
All we ned is to hope,
And soon the time will come,
When our differences will melt,
And our souls will be one
