Tell Me A Story - Poem

In a speech given at the 2017 TED conference in Vancouver, Canada the late Rabbi L-rd Jonathan Sacks, spoke about "facing the future without fear." One of the points he made is that, in order to have a fearless future, we must remember our identity, who we are, not only as individuals but as a collective nation and share our history and stories of the past.

Rabbi Sacks than spoke about the Jewish People, saying how although we have been in exile, dispersed and scattered all around the world for two thousand years, we never lost our identity, because at least once a year, on the festival of Pesach we told our story to ourselves, as well as, to our children, alongside eating the Matzah and Marror reminding ourselves of our morals and values.

Never Losing. Our. Identity.

Based on that thought I wanted to create a poem in honor of Pesach. I humbly present to you this poem, titled, quite fittingly, "Tell Me A Story".

I would also humbly like to dedicate this poem to the wonderful memory of Rabbi L-rd Sacks, whose wisdom, warmth, humor and brilliance, has been one of the many great influences in my life.

Tell Me  A Story - Poem
Won't you please tell me a story,
Speak of a time, long gone in to the past,
Find a page, a chapter, in your memory,
Tell me a story, so those memories can last.

Tell me of a time when we ran,
Across fields and meadows and valleys,
Tell it to me in your own way,
Because your stories and tales are your specialty.

Amaze me with anecdotes of courage,
With holy lessons from our sages,
Tell me of a different era,
A different time, another age.

Send me on an adventure,
Take me into the page,
Tell me a story,
Let me feel part of the act, on the stage.

Tell me a story,
About who I am,
Tell me about myself,
So I can know where I stand.

Tell me a story,
About our nation, about our journey,
So I will remember who we are,
And I will tap in to our identity.
