Red Little Light - Poem
Sometimes, I write a poem based on an idea I had, a video I watched or something interesting I heard. There are also times when I would see a photograph of something, maybe one of a sunrise or sunset, maybe one of a beautiful lake or tree and I write a poem based around that. Just trying to put words to a moment in nature, captured by the camera and shared with the world.
But sometimes, I see photographs which are different from the rest of them. These photographs seem to tell a story. Those are photographs which are unique, they are a little more nuanced, more sophisticated than others. These snapshots are not a moment of, "Hey, let me get a picture of this one", but rather they have a richer, more elegant, more deep meaning to the photographer.
There is something about these types of photographs that speaks to me. They inspire me, to write a poem based on their story they share. Or to create my own meaning from them.
That is exactly what I did with this poem which you will read soon.
I saw a photograph of a car with its back red lights on in the rain. Being in a writing mood, I began to craft a random story, seemingly not going anywhere, not meaning much to me, more so feeling like something not as good as the other poems I write. There was nothing special, no message that elevated these words on my phone, from just words to a meaningful piece of poetry. Until... I felt the whispers of the message I needed to share. Something told me to take the poem and put a certain spin on it and like that it would come together to form the complete piece.
I continued to write, getting more connected to the simple, sweet message of the poem and when I finished, I knew this would be the one I'd share this week.
Here it is!
I hope you like it!
Let me know how you connect to its simple, little message. :)
All the best,
Yitzy Schweitzer
Driving on the highway,
Late at night, as the rain pours down,
Taking a wrong turn, losing concentration,
I'm lost, as my windshield, in the rain, is drowned.
Hoping for the waters to settle,
Praying for G-d to set me in the correct direction,
The thunder crashes, lightning flashes violently,
As I grip the wheel, hopeful still, but yet filled with desperation.
Suddenly, I see a car in front of me,
It's red light, clear despite the downpour,
Through the drops, the light is visible, and bright,
I notice it's taking a shortcut, so I follow it, drive a little .ore.
I don't know if it's heading the same way as me,
Yet, the red light seems to beckon me closer,
I put my trust in the One Above, I believe He is leading me right,
Sending this car to guide me to the correct way, it was Him in true kindness that made this occur.
As we both take the shortcut and I recognize that I am now back on the correct path,
I silently thank Him, Who reigns above,
I keep moving on to my destination,
Knowing I witnessed an expression of His love.
He sent the car and it's little light,
To guide me through the storm and rain,
He sends so many strangers and good-hearted people,
To help you and me out every day,
We must recognize those strangers,
Thank them for their kind deeds,
Because it's the goodness we perform for others,
That keeps the world alive, strong and happy
